Fluffy puppies, wagging tails, belly rubs… dogs are the best things in the world. But they are also the smelliest, messiest and sometimes most expensive things in the world, too. It’s not all Instagram accounts and furry cuddles, people.

If you’re tossing up getting a puppy, but are just a little unsure that the poochlife is for you, here’s a handy list of reasons why you should consider a lush, green house plant instead!

You’re on a budget
Vets. Food. Insurance. Accessories. Treats. Not to mention those little dog outfits… dog-sized denim jacket anyone? No brainer. But all those expenses add up every week/ month/ year. So if you’re a little low on cash, or you just don’t want to spend big bucks for vet bills, a leafy houseplant might be a better option. You could even take a cutting from the local park or a friend’s garden so you don’t have to pay for it at all. Plus, all you need to do is water it, and water is free!

You’re a perfectionist
If there is one thing that dogs are great at doing, it’s messing up your house. And eating your favourite pair of leather shoes. And occasionally jumping on your black couch leaving Yeti amounts of fur strewn across the pillows. Adorable and happy to see you? Yes. A perfectionist’s best friend? No. All we’re saying is that one great benefit of putting a plant down on a table, is they will ‘stay’ and look pretty without chewing on your remote.

You’re a health buff
Sure, taking your dog for a walk can help you stay fit, but did you know that according to researchers at the University of Melbourne and RMIT University, simply adding one medium sized plant to a medium sized room, increases air quality by up to 25%! And when it comes to improving wellbeing, five or more plants leads to an improved mood, better concentration and better air quality! That’s something a dog fart doesn’t do….

You’re a workaholic

Early mornings and late nights? The last thing you need is that nagging guilt of your little pooch sitting at home, lonely and staring at the door. Avoid a sad puppy and fill your home with as many plants as you can muster! Let them hang from the ceilings and fill corners with greenery – not only do studies show they help lower your stress levels, they’ll also look so pretty that you’ll crack out a smile when you get home, no matter how bad your day was.
