Forget Yoda, the Dalai Lama and that psychic from Real Housewives Of Melbourne, you can get all your advice from the weird and wacky film repertoire of Hollywood creative J. J. Abrams.

Sure, he’s directed, written and produced some epic TV series like Lost, Felicity and Alias but it’s in his films that his life lessons really shine.

So, sit back, enjoy, grab a cup of tea and learn a little something as you read these five invaluable lessons from our pick of his best films…

Lesson: “Impossible doesn’t mean what you think it means.”

Film: Mission Impossible

Honestly, after five films (and a sixth out in July this year) you’d think someone would have realised that the WHOLE movie franchise should really have been called Mission: Possible or more specifically, Mission: Possible but it’s really, really hard.

A still from the film 'Super 8'

Lesson: “Listen to your dog more.”

Film: Super 8

A few days after a mysterious train crash, witnessed by a group of teens, strange things start to happen. So guess who decides to leave town? That’s right. ALL THE DOGS. Lesson learned? Dogs know what’s up. Maybe we should give them a little more cred?

A still from the film 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Lesson: “Old people can still kick-ass (but they might die trying).”

Film: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Yes, just because wisecracking Han Solo now has more wrinkles than a school uniform at 3pm doesn’t mean that he can’t fight like a boss. Proving that old people are pretty handy sometimes, Han totally holds his own up against the overlords of the universe… but then - SPOILER ALERT - dies trying to fight the evil that lurks in his son.

A still from the film 'Armageddon'

Lesson: “If in doubt, try using a nuclear bomb.”

Film: Armageddon

What’s the most logical thing to do if an asteroid is hurtling towards earth? Yep, you guessed it. Send Bruce Willis and a bunch of other men up into space with nuclear weapons to blow it up. Seemed like a good idea at the time…

A still from the film 'Cloverfield'

Lesson: “Leave stranded friends behind… ALWAYS.”

Film: Cloverfield

If Rob and his friends had just left town instead of running towards an enormous creature hell-bent on destroying everything, just so they could try to save Beth (who selfishly got stranded in her apartment) then their evening would have been a LOT less dramatic. Just saying.
