Are Shell Accessories Cool Again?

This early 2000’s trend is back and we don’t know how we feel about it

The naughties was an interesting decade. Technology was booming - the iPod was first released, YouTube was brand new and Facebook was quickly bringing the world together – but our style on the other hand, was not.

Those were the years of our ugly phase. We were all too excited to fake tan, we over-plucked our eyebrows almost to the point of nonexistence, and we pimped our rides with frangipani decals and fake bullet holes. It wasn’t cute, which makes us question any trend from that era that tries to come back. Case in point: shell accessories.

Back then cowrie shells were an everywhere embellishment. We wore them like a daisy chain around our necks, they were stitched to our clothes in frangipani-inspired floral arrangements, and were even braided together on long belt strands that we wore low on our hips (and we mean l o w). We went cowrie shell crazy and have major regrets looking back, but have we learnt our lesson?

The shell trend is trying to redeem itself by taking an elevated approach. New styles are popping up everywhere and this time around they’re dipped in gold and dangle off dainty little chains.

So, are shell accessories cool again? We’ll let you be the judge.
