They’re the hardest wearing of hardware, the all-weather solution. The Land Rover of shoes, boots are your on-road, off-road accessory. The heavy-hitters of the accessory world, they’re the best way to keep that ice-cold breeze at bay. Crazy comfortable and super sturdy, a solid pair of boots will toughen up your weekend standard of jeans and a jumper. Or, styled just so, can be rocked with a suit or whatever makes the dress code cut in your office. Whether you run with whiskey-brown or black as night or in a shade more like sand, your boots can take you anywhere you damn well please. Like Hunter S says, buy the ticket, take the ride.

Though, when it comes to style, it’s a case of choose your own adventure.

The ultimate off-roaders

Channel your inner mountaineer – adventure is ahead. This is the lace-up style that would never lie about being the outdoor type. Think anything Timberland-esque and be unafraid to scuff them up. If this is your vibe, don’t go to town with checks and plaids – instead, keep your threads neutral and reach for chunky knits and slim-line pants.

Rebel feels

If you’re looking for a different kind of tough, lace up a pair of combat-style boots. What was once standard-issue military, the punk – and later, the grunge – movement stole them for their own. From the Sex Pistol’s lace-ups to Cobain’s Dr Martens, punk is far from dead.

If they were good enough for The Stones…

Although sported by The Beatles – complete with Cuban Heels – Chelsea boots found their cool with the Rolling Stones. They’re rock 'n' roll, have a bad-ass vibe. And, they’ll go on tour with you - an easy on and off at airport security. Team these again with slim pants, with a tiny ankle-showing break or none at all. The more tapered the toe, the more up market the feel. A Chelsea Boot is a go-to for anyone who spends any time in the office or whose look can remotely be described as ‘polished’. In this category are the all-time favourite R.M. Williams and for a more lo-fi pub-ready look, slip on a pair of Blundstone boots.

The weekenders

Desert boots are the perfect weekender and an all-time Australian classic. No matter what’s underfoot, you’ve got it handled. Lightweight and with a low-rise, these are good to go with just about everything in your wardrobe. Wear them with or without socks.
