Flat abs are the holy grail of fitness. Core strength and stability count for so much more than just a crop-top worthy rig. They have been named as go-to’s to avoid / ease back pain, to maintain a strong and healthy posture and to ensure your core is doing all it needs to do in daily life, making sure other muscles don’t need to overcompensate.

So, what are the core exercises you need to be doing on the reg and is there any way to avoid the dreaded sit-ups?

“Surprisingly, some of the best core exercises are usually not done on your bum or back,” explains Lean Bean Fitness’s founder Lizzie Bland. A former professional dancer, Bland is a female fitness expert and trainer.

“One of my favourite waist-cinching exercises can be done standing with mini dumbbells (or cans of beans) in your hands.”

Stand with your feet just a little wider than hip-width apart and get to work with those cans of yours, punching the weights forward, one at a time, while twisting at the hips.

“Do 100 reps. Youch.”

Another hack for flattening up those abs is the plank.

“Try different variations,” recommends Bland.

Think one foot or one arm hovering, or introduce a little movement into your hold. Come up, from your elbows, on to your hands and then move back down to your elbows. Then, press repeat. A lot.

“It’s another way of working your stabilising muscles which improves your balance and agility as well as hitting a few more muscle groups.”

Count these into your daily core work for the win.
