What’s on: David LaChapelle at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale

Where: Art Gallery of Ballarat, Victoria

When: 19 August – 17 September

It’s fitting that the location for David LaChapelle’s first major photography exhibition in Australia is not in any of the state capitals, but in the slightly more obscure location of Ballarat.

In 2006, the already well-established American photographer – who had shot the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, Elton John and others – retreated to an eco-farm in Hawaii to get away from the glamorous, high-octane New York social world he had done so much to document.

Now his work is on show in the Victorian one-time gold-rush town, as part of the International Foto Biennale, being held from 19 August through to 17 September. The inclusion of LaChapelle – one of the most celebrated photographers in the world - is the undoubted centrepiece of the event.

A king of quirky visuals, the snapper’s most famous pieces mix fashion and celebrity, pop culture and social commentary, high art and trashiness. His images have appeared in every fashion publication worth its salt, from Vogue to GQ and many more, in every corner of the world.

This exhibition will showcase 90 of LaChapelle’s works from a career spanning over 30 years and is a must-see for art and fashion lovers alike.

What’s on: Darwin Festival

Where: Darwin (various locations), Northern Territory

When: 10 August - 27 August

A riot of sound, colour and Top End exuberance, the Darwin Festival celebrates its 14th year with a line-up of more than 80 events across the city.

There will be music, art and cabaret, and for the style-obsessed, the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Fashion Show will showcase the latest fashion and wearable art.

What’s on: CinefestOZ

Where: Margaret River Region, Western Australia

When: 23 August – 27 August

Following on from the month’s earlier big film event – the Melbourne International Film Festival – comes the smaller, but no less impressive CinefestOZ.

Held in one of Australia’s most idyllic spots, CinefestOZ is celebrating its 10th year with a bumper programme, packed with premieres, docos and Indigenous film events.

COMING UP NEXT MONTH:

What’s on: Snowtunes Music Festival

Where: Jindabyne, NSW

When: 1-2 September

You’ll need to get fully rugged up for Snowtunes Festival – or else you’ll have to get dancing long and hard enough to fight off the sub-zero temperatures.

With a stellar line-up of Aussie and international bands and producers–– all playing in the snowfields – including the likes of Gang of Youths and DJ Tigerlily - this two-day event is that ultimate thing: a music fest and ski trip in one.
