Everyone's Wearing Berets and You Can Too

Meghan Markle wore one. Enough said

We’re sensing a fashion revolt, and it’s coming from France.

The French are known for minimal make-up, they covet hair that looks like they - literally - woke up like this, and their outfit aspirations eschew over-the-top trend pieces in favour of those that are practical and flattering.

There’s no denying, a more effortless aesthetic is taking over Instagram, with ‘glass skin’ taking off, and power brand Glossier making the natural, bare-faced look cool in NYC and beyond.

But which international style icon would be influential enough to give a more minimal fashion look a platform? The US’ newest European resident, Meghan Markle, of course.

Her simple style (well, for a royal at least) is reminiscent of the French way of dressing, and has had us all reaching deep into our wardrobes for classic trench coats and collared shirt-dresses.

But what to wear on our heads when the temperature is plummeting, with no sign of slowing down?

A beanie seems a little #thuglife for our newfound love of cigarette jeans and ballet flats.

Well... a beret, of course.

We saw Meghan wear one earlier this year (not that we’re stalking her or anything), and when Meghan does anything, the world follows. But this new look doesn’t have to be prim - a dash of rebellious red is a must.

3 ways to wear a beret...

With a red dress and boots

Blogger @nicolelylam is all over this look, wearing a rich red in a silky dress. She keeps it fresh and modern by teaming it with the shoe of the moment - white boots. Her classic black beret is perfectly clashed with tiny sunglasses, which is another trend piece that’s huge right now. You may want to raid your mum’s garden for some roses, too.

With a spotted skirt and mules

Model @mimielashiry has been wearing berets a lot lately. She’s teamed them with everything from a casual tee, shorts and sneakers, to a more preppy long-sleeved black top, red skirt and flat black mules. The key is to keep the look tonal. If they can be worn by the bohemian queen, we’re convinced it’s a thing.

With a white top and jeans

Going for a more classic Parisian vibe is content creator @kristywho. Her white off-the-shoulder top and faded-blue jeans are such a cute combo with white boots. The simple outfit allows for covetable accessories like her black beret and clear tote bag.

Now, anyone for an espresso and a baguette?
