Classic Cuts and How They Should Fit

Skinny

Men - skinny jeans should be tight but not look like they’ve been painted on. Find styles that sit snugly on your hips and are a little longer in the legs, so they stack around the ankles.

Women - skinny jeans should be a wardrobe staple. Experiment with different styles – from cropped to high-waisted and even jeggings.

Slim

A well-cut slim jean should be the foundation of any man's smart-casual wardrobe. They should follow your silhouette but give you enough room to move. Turn up the cuffs neatly to achieve the perfect length.

Tapered / Mom Jeans

The perfect tapered fit will sit high on your hips and loosely follow the silhouette of your legs. They should finish above your ankles – if they don’t, casually roll the cuffs or cut them straight off leaving loose, frayed ends.

Straight

Straight-leg jeans should have a more relaxed fit that tapered styles. They're a popular choice for channelling nineties style so try wearing them with a wide cuff and canvas sneakers.

Kick Flares

Flared jeans are a flattering choice for any woman. Look for styles with a slim fit over the thighs, a gentle flare from the knees, and a cropped length.

Things to Look Out For

Composition

100% Cotton denim will have no stretch. This type of denim can range from feeling soft or rigid, lightweight or heavy, but best suits cuts that don’t hug your figure, like mom jeans and straight-leg designs. Blended denim, e.g. part cotton part elastane, will have more stretch, so if you’re looking for a comfortable pair of skinny jeans check the fabric composition – less cotton means more stretch.

Weight

Lightweight denim means it’s a thinner fabric and is a favourable feature for skinny jeans and denim shirts. Heavier denim tends to have a crisper feel and will hold its shape, making it ideal for trucker jackets, dungarees and other classic jean silhouettes like slim fits and tapered.

Measurements

When buying jeans online, it’s a good idea to have your old pair handy to make comparisons. The inside leg measurement will give you a rough idea of how long the legs are, the rise will indicate how far up they sit on your hips, and the cuff will tell you how tight they’ll be around your ankles.

Rise

The rise in jeans refers to how jeans will sit on your hips. Low-rise jeans are designed to sit either on or just above your hips and tend to be the most comfortable because there’s less restrictions. Mid-rise jeans sit slightly higher, roughly above your hip bones but lower than your belly button. This is a flattering style on most body shapes and reduces any err… coin slot situations you might experience with low-rise designs. High-waisted jeans will sit around the smallest part of your torso and provide a flattering silhouette for women, however, be warned this rise is not made for buffet-style dining.

Other Tips and Tricks

Don’t assume

Just because you don’t look like the model, doesn’t mean that style won’t look just as good on you. Take the chance, try them on.

Read the descriptions

Check the size guide and measurements

Every brand is different so it’s worth having a tape measure handy. If you’re still not certain on your size, buy two options – you can try them both on in the comfort of your own home and return what doesn’t fit. Find out more about our return policy.
