Christmas is all about spending quality time with friends and family but when there’s a big meal involved sometimes you need a little more motivation to get up and mingle. So, what better way to get everyone together and make new memories than with a little friendly competition. Sure, you can bring out the old board games or download a charade app on your phone, but why not get a little creative and make this Christmas one to remember with these games that everyone will love.

Christmas Piñata

Having a piñata at a party always goes down well with the kids – because who doesn’t love smashing something blindly and being rewarded with candy? But it can be fun for the grown-ups too. Hype up the incentive to bash through a papier mache Christmas tree by swapping the sweet candy filling with some cash. If you’re concerned about loose coins flying all over the backyard, then stick raffle tickets to the chocolates and announce the prizes, like gift vouchers or movie tickets, at the end.

Dizzy Dash

Turn your living room into The Ellen Show and send your family spinning for extra Christmas presents. If you don’t have spinning office chairs, turning around in circles a couple of times will do the trick. Be sure to wait a significant amount of time after lunch before getting stuck into this game.

Pass the Parcel – Mitten Style

Because when you’re grown up, ripping open wrapping paper is all too easy so toughen the challenge with a pair of oven mitts. If you’re like this family, instead of music, you have until the next person rolls doubles to get through each layer. Up the ante with mystery prizes between each layer like a “get out of doing Christmas dishes for the day card” or “for your next turn you can only use your feet to unwrap”.

Reindeer Antler Knock-Out

For this you’ll need a pair of women’s stockings with something weighty in the toes like a tennis ball. Recycle empty drink bottles and line them up in a row with fun prizes waiting at the end. Slip the waistband over your head and start knocking bottles down, making sure no hands or feet are being used in the process.

Bite the Gift Box

There’s always random boxes lying around once all the presents have been opened so why not turn them into a game. Take a cereal-sized box, place it in the centre of the circle and one by one each family member must use their teeth to pick up the box and pass it on to the next person. Soggy cardboard isn’t fun for anyone so tear your piece off and make the box smaller and smaller each time.
