Have we reached peak sparkle?

After the glitter obsession that was 2017, is it time to tone down the twinkle?

If 2016 was the year of the basic (athleisure and normcore anyone?) 2017 was definitely the year of sparkle. From mermaid makeup palettes to shimmer coffee, glitter beards to Saint Laurent’s $12,000 crystal encrusted boots we sprinkled that stuff everywhere. And if it didn’t already twinkle, shimmer or shine, the genius KiraKira+ let us add some post-shot sparkle so that Instagram would always see us for the magical unicorns we are. Yeah, we were all a little bit extra. And we loved it.

Trends tend to spark a reaction and send fashion soaring in the opposite direction. So, what of 2018? Are we facing a year of beige and brown? Will blending in become the new way to shine? If the international catwalks are anything to go by, don’t pack away the bedazzler just yet. Sequins were splashed across all the major spring/summer shows with the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Dior and Oscar de la Renta helping us shimmy into the New Year.

But of course, it wouldn’t be fashion without an evolution. And so, this year rather than a “more is more” mantra, we’re refraining from diving head first into the glitter pool and refining it a little instead. The glitz of choice will be embellishments and accent pieces paired with wardrobe classics to create a more balanced look.

Sparkly shoes will become a staple with everything from combat boots that pretty up utilitarian pieces, to platform heels that bring the party to any outfit. Other accessories like sunglasses, backpacks and clutches also get the sparkle treatment and statement pieces like sequinned skirts will also get a run - but will be paired with boots or trainers to for a fresh, more wearable look. In 2018 just think of sparkles as the new neutral and shine on.
