So you want to be a runner. Good move! Running is an awesome way to exercise, clear your head and feel good all round. But without the right running shoes, you risk undoing all the positive, ahem, strides you make. So before you go sending off your 2020 Olympics application, read on for the three golden rules whenn buying your first, or next, pair of runners.

It’s never a case of one-size-fits-all

Just like Cinderella, the perfect shoe is out there waiting for you. But there are a number of factors that come into play in the search for “the one”. First, your gait – do you run with a neutral, overpronated or underpronated gait? An expert can advise you if you’re not up to speed. Is there enough space in the front? Generally, you should be able to fit the width of your thumb in the gap between your big toe and the top of the shoe. Is the amount of cushioning and arch support right for your level of experience? Newbies might need more support, whereas experienced runners may prefer to be closer to the ground.

You can do serious damage with the wrong running shoes

This one is especially true for people who run on a hard surface, like concrete. Each time your foot hits the ground, you’re putting the force of three times your own weight onto that foot. Understandably, if you don’t have the right support, then you’re going to feel the impact of that force pretty quickly. In short? Injury. The right running shoes help absorb the force and support you where you need it.

A smart investment is the way to achieve your fitness goals

The wrong running shoes will ensure you quickly lose motivation – it’s as much a psychological game as it is a physical one. If your runners don’t fit just right, and you’re not totally psyched to slip them on before your morning run, then it’s going to be so much harder to get the energy you need to get out there. Having a pair that you love, and feel great in, is sometimes all it takes to keep you on track.
