There are, believe it or not, some occasions where your sneakers just won’t make the grade. A wedding, be it yours or someone else’s, or a formal-ish occasion of any other description. These kind of occasions call for footwear that’s a little more James Bond than Justin Bieber, something that says, ‘I’ve got my sh&t together' and something that will play nicely with your suit or tux or well-ironed, slightly cuffed chinos. Dress shoes, though, don’t have to be solely for dress occasions. They’re the easiest way to elevate a jeans and shirt combo.

Or, you might be an office-job kind of guy and we’re preaching to the choir: you wear them on the daily to wheel and deal. If this is your go, you want shoes that say you’re going places, and, dammit, you know how to get there.

No matter how often you roll them out, you’re looking for something that looks pricey, feels premium. Go for slim contours and streamlined shapes. Whether your dress shoes of choice loafers, brogues, or an easy slide-on boot, shoes are always worth saving up for. If looked after properly, they’ll last you years and are an investment piece where you can afford it. The key here is to keep them in good condition. Polish them on the regular and resole as necessary.
