How To Make Friends

And influence people's style.

Some things stand the test of time. They're a legacy. A heritage of sorts. A living history. And Friends is one of these. Ten seasons and as many years strong, Friends is one of those shows you can’t quite click past. Each episode makes your day, your month and even your year.

And any wonder. As the 90s enjoys a continued revival with no sign of slowing, any randomly-chosen episode of Friends holds 60 minutes of pure, unadulterated joy. Sure, we play witness to Joey’s antics as Al Pacino’s butt double, and jump at the chance to see Brad and Jen on the screen when they were still actually Brad and Jen, but also: the fashion. And, as an 11-year-old girl, the style inspo they offered was priceless.

We drank in Rachel’s denim overalls and white sneakers with blazers all at once. We wore her mini skirts and cropped tees and her hair. We ALL had her hair.

And then there was Monica, the clean freak slash mother figure of the group. That woman, she had her stuff together. Case in point: for a brief point in time she dated Tom Selleck (AKA Magnum PI). She was conservative, but kinda cool. A good girl, chic in crisp white blouses, vests and, of course, cardigans.

Phoebe was the hippy of the group. Ensuring blondes kept their ditzy reputation, she was slow off the mark with wickedly comic timings. She gave us fringed jackets and floral prints; statement jewellery and a classic half-up, half-down hair do.

And then, there were the guys: Chandler, Ross and Joey loved-enough Tribbiani. All three of them in a steady uniform of baggy 90s light wash jeans, sweats and shirts.

Joey, though, he had his own spin-off (we didn't see it – did you?). The struggling actor loved meatball subs and Baywatch (can you blame him?) and when there was a lady in site n he was “practically Rain Man.”

So, while we’re still waiting for Netflix to drop all 10 seasons – thank you in advance and please –  order yourself a Joey Special (that’s just two pizzas instead of one….) and mainline these episodes.
