The clocks have been adjusted, the nights are cooler, and the flu shot posters are up on the office walls serving as a gentle reminder - winter is coming. We’ve been lucky to have unusually warmer weather for this time of year, so pulling out the puffer jackets this early might make for a statement style move but will definitely feel a touch OTT.

Summer may officially be over but that doesn’t mean you have to pack your entire warm weather wardrobe away into boxes. Sure, you might not get the most wear out of your bikini bottoms come June but save your slip dresses from storage – we’ve got a few easy ways to transform them from being slinky summer staples to transeasonal wardrobe layers.

Wearing a plain tee under a slip dress might just be one of the most practical style tips we’ve brought back from the nineties. Find slim-fitting styles to keep your silhouette smooth and avoid unnecessary lumps and bumps beneath figure-skimming slip dresses – you can always disguise them with a sweater tied around your waist to complete your nineties vibe. Don’t be afraid to wear a tee with a print either – it only adds more character to your look.

When a light tee won’t offer you enough warmth for the day, try layering with something heavier. We’ve paired a slouchy hoodie with a loose-fitting linen slip dress and completed the outfit with sneakers for a cool, laid-back look. If your slip dress shows off your curves and you want to keep it that way, simply wear the cropped hoodie over the top or swap it for knitwear with a body-con fit, which will give your look a more elevated edge.

Having a top peak out from beneath your dress straps isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, plus it’s not always that easy to find the perfect styles to match. Layering a shirt over your slip dress creates the illusion of wearing a top and skirt, plus it gives you more opportunities to outfit repeat without anyone noticing; slip dress on its own at one event, slip dress with shirt on top at the next, slip dress with different shirt on top at the event after – you get the drift, its versatile.

Of course, if you’ve worn your slip dresses to death you want a completely different look for autumn, you can always find new arrivals landing every day.
