In Search Of Naked Ear Nostalgia

Simple stud pleasures are back.

Mama told us there’d be days like this. When you’re deep into the movie Notting Hill and all you can think about is how sleek Julia Roberts looks with her braids and simple silver studs. Waves of nostalgia set in for a distant time when your piercings score was only two and curating your ear candy was way easier. We can’t say we weren’t warned about this when we were young and begging to get our ‘seconds’ done. Bejewelled lobes all the way up to the helix have been the next gen’s rebellious signature (and don’t get us wrong we are hearting those shiny ear constellations all over our Insta-feed) but the feeling is bittersweet. Don’t underestimate the minimal allure of a naked ear and the perfect pair of studs. Since bare skin like this is hard to come by, our 00s flashback has been elevated to a whole new level of cool.

For grown-up luxe, add a sprinkling of precious coloured jewels with your hair slicked-back into a neat ponytail. Or plead innocent via plain Jane piercings like rose gold discs by Thomas Sabo and a touch of cherry lip gloss. Made all the more awesome with a high-impact outfit (cough cough: floral prairie dress). We’re also suckers for the crystal flower style that reminds us of when we were 13 and listening to Ashanti. Rotate these with your daily tee and blue jeans.

Creative hacks for the many that love the look but can’t take back their years of needlework … #NoRegrets. Get discreet with your sizes and play around with the combination. Fun up the first pair like mix ’n’ match moon and star then choose itsy, bitsy studs for the other ear accessories. They will seem barely there yet glitter in the sun at all the right angles. If stripping back on the heavy metals has you feeling a little light headed then add in a glossy hair clasp for that extra bling fix.

With our new age wardrobes blurring the lines between kooky and chic (see: athleisure trend) a minimalist approach to your jewellery gives space for the latest street tricks. Collar-grazing earrings are rad but way too much if you want to wear this season’s belt bag and tech sneakers too. Sometimes mum really does know best. Perennial favourites always seem to be less is better. In this case, a subtle gleam across the ear can never be too much.
