Is It Cold Enough to Warrant A Puffer Jacket?

How to wear your doona out and still look cool

If you asked us a few years ago, the only time we’d voluntarily agree to wearing a puffy down jacket was ski season. Even then we would have to be forced by the threat of frostbite to finally put the daggy design on. The wearable sleeping bags added so much bulk you’d look at least three times the size you actually were and they made that embarrassing swoosh noise every time you made the slightest move. There was no way puffer jackets would make it to our regular wardrobe rotation.

Fast-forward to today and almost everyone’s got one hanging off their shoulders. So what sparked the change? Didn’t Drake only dance around in a puffer ironically for his Hotline Bling music video? Wasn’t Solange’s 2017 Met Gala red carpet doona just part of her theatrical ice-skater costume? Turns out these what-the moments influenced our wardrobes in a major way and now every brand from Topshop to Tarocash has at least one puffer jacket for us to snuggle up in.

The fact that it’s not quite cold enough to justify lugging our quilts around on the daily doesn’t bother us anymore either. It should because these things are seriously warm, but spotted them on the streets way before the leaves started falling like it was no big deal. The trick to staying on trend without breaking out in a sweat? Here’s how to wear snow jackets when it’s not even close to snowing in your city:

Don’t fully commit: you won’t risk overheating if you expose one shoulder while you’re wearing a puffer jacket. Plus, you’ll like you have that same cool, careless attitude towards style like most street style pros.

Keep your jacket unzipped at all times: it proves you’ve learnt how to layer and you can show off the jacket lining, just like the designer intended.

Wear it but don’t really wear it: having just your arms in the sleeves is a look according to almost every girl on Instagram.

Go sleeveless: puffer vests are just as on-trend right now as the full-sleeved varieties. Your arms might feel the chill but at least your core will be nice and warm.

Style it with something short: whether it’s a crop top or a mini skirt, having a little bit of skin exposed will hopefully balance out your body temperature.

But if you’re one of those people who always feels cold, then make the most of these puffy styles and pile them on.
