Los Angeles is the city of angels, the place where dreams come true and magic is made. It’s West Coast cool with traffic that will give you enough time to learn a whole other language twice over. Whether you’re up for a walk through the Hollywood heat or keen to hit Melrose Place, or if you just want to find somewhere poolside – here are our picks for the city that rarely sleeps.

Eat… The spaghetti bolognese at Sunset Strip’s Chateau Marmont. It’s not on the menu, but if you ask politely, all your dreams will come true. This is the hotel where Led Zeppelin rode their motorcycles through the lobby in the 60s, where Helmut Newton lived (and died) and where Sophia Coppola filmed Somewhere. It’s a home away from home for many LA regulars. Dine on the terrace and you’re sure to see some familiar famous faces. The only one you won’t see is Lindsay Lohan – she’s banned for life. You’ll have to commit it to memory though – no phones allowed.

Drive… Out to Malibu for the day. Chow down at Malibu Farm Pier Cafe and drink a bloody Mary that may very well be the best one you have ever tasted. Take a dip in the iconic beach or rent a log and ride it out. It’s a long, gentle peeling wave. Humming the Baywatch theme song is optional but highly recommended.

Stop by… Downtown for a drink at the Broken Shaker, the rooftop bar at the Freehand Hotel. Drop in at the Grand Central Market for oysters (or whatever else you’re feeling like - there’s plenty to choose from) or see a gig at the The Theatre at Ace Hotel on Broadway. If you’re wanting a gallery fix, hit The Broad Museum (it’s free admission) or the Museum of Contemporary Art on Grand Ave.

Play tourist… in Echo Park and rent a paddleboat or head Venice-way and walk Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Everything is delicious (especially the ice cream at Salt & Straw). Hire a bike and ride it from Venice to Santa Monica.

Walk… Up the Hollywood Hills to the Griffith Observatory. You’ll see those famous white letters and no doubt some celebrities. Great way to get your cardio in for the day.

Shop… At the Melrose Flea Market, LA’s favourite flea market and a great way to spend your Sunday if you’re running low on funds.  You never know what you’ll find…
