Many fine diners have undone their top buttons and loosened their ties a little in recent years, doing away with the stiff tablecloths and even stiffer waitstaff in favour of a more relaxed and convivial affair. Even so, there are plenty of restaurants out there that still favour a smart dress code to go with the refinement of the experience on offer.

Here are five of Australia’s best – with jackets suited perfectly for the occasion.

QUAY

Still one of the country’s finest after nearly two decades of superior service, Peter Gilmore’s Quay, overlooking glittering Sydney Harbour, continually hosts the rich and powerful in need of an exclusive feed. The months-long waiting list gives ample chance to find the perfect blazer for the occasion.

@vuedemonde

VUE DE MONDE

Melbourne’s Vue de Monde towers above the rest, and not only because it’s located 55 floors up in the soaring Rialto Building. Chef Shannon Bennett’s tasting menu – a succession of beautifully presented, delicate dishes that will please any mouth – is complemented by a décor so suave, dressing down would be offensive.

@magillestaterestaurant

MAGILL ESTATE

Whether romancing or financing, there are few better places for an intimate dinner than at Adelaide’s Magill Estate, home of premium wine producer Penfolds. Its coolly atmospheric restaurant is a fine diner with an edge of true luxury and a collection of wines that require serious dollars. You’ll want to dress for the occasion.

@wildflowerrestaurant

@wildflowerrestaurant

WILDFLOWER

Situated in Perth’s COMO The Treasury, servicing the five-star hotel that takes up most of the converted 19th-century building, Wildflower can lay claim to being just about the best of the best in WA. That’s made it a regular haunt for chic clientele, so be prepared to spruce up if you want to fit in.

@bacchusbrisbane

BACCHUS

That Brisbane’s Bacchus is the exclusive Queensland home to Dom Perignon champagne is an indication of the VIP-level the restaurant operates at, bolstered by a collection of mind-blowing dishes. In among the chattering cocktail dresses and tailored suits, you’ll feel naked without a jacket at this one.
