Talk about paradise. Magnetic Island – or Maggie, as the locals call her– is a place where time (almost) stands still. Once you’ve been there, you can understand why people stay there beyond generations at a stretch. With secluded beaches and crazy-clear waters, koalas a plenty and beautiful bush walks, it's one for your to-go list.

Fly … Into Townsville and then make your way to the ferry station. After that, it’s an easy half hour and you’ll be in paradise.

Get around … In a rental car or, if you like the wind in your air and free air-con, rent a moke. If this is your thing, just google ‘Tropical Topless Magnetic Island’. Not even kidding.

Eat … Early. On Maggie, you are well and truly running on island time. Most places close early-ish so it’s best to make it a sunset affair. For dinner, make a booking at Barefoot Gallery overlooking Horseshoe Bay - delicious. For lunch, head to Scalliwags near Nelly Bay. Super fresh and crazy healthy, they have organic coffee and killer smoothies. Oh yes, and it’s pirate themed. They serve the best kind of goodness out of what looks like  caravan. It’s a pop up cafe though, that runs from May through ‘til October. Be sure to call to make sure they’re open.

Do ... Endless days of bushwalking and bay swimming. Break Instagram with the crystal-clear waters of Nelly Bay. Magnetic Island National Park covers almost half of the island, with 24 kilometres of walking tracks. Choose your own adventure and prese repeat on the daily.

Saddle up … Why walk when you can ride? Check in with Sam at Horseshoe Bay Ranch for bush and beach riding. Yes, you can take your horse in the water. All the while, humming Daryl Braithwaite's Horses.

See … So much. Wildlife, for a start. Maggie has one of the densest populations of koalas going so koala sightings are pretty much guaranteed. Also: rock wallabies. You’ll find them on mass at the end of Armand Way in Geoffrey Bay. You can feed them slices of apple / convince yourself they’re your best mate.

Spend your sunset … At Horseshoe Bay. The colours of the sky as the sun sets is just beyond.

Party … Time your trip with one of Maggie’s legendary full moon parties that are apparently off the charts / three-day long affairs. Dance ‘til dawn.
