It’s time to put in the hard yards again, all in the name of a good cause of course, as this year’s City2Surf brings its annual, unique mix of adrenaline and colour to Sydney this Saturday and Sunday.

The 14km race follows the usual route from Sydney’s Hyde Park through Rose Bay, up Heartbreak Hill to Vaucluse, before finishing above Bondi Beach’s golden stretch of sand, where crowds will welcome the sprightly contenders and weary-legged fun-runners home.

The event attracts more than 80,000 people and, since 2008 has raised $32 million for charity, making the fact that you’ll spend all next week groaning like a grandad every time you have to lower yourself into a chair worthwhile.

So much more than a simple race though, City2Surf has now become more like a weekend-long festival. This year’s edition will offer yoga and live entertainment on the Saturday, and as always, expect a riotous party atmosphere on Sunday to keep you going through the pain barrier.

And if you’re going to party, you’ve got to dress for the occasion, right?

While there will always be space at City2Surf for costumes – and we fully support you channeling your inner superhero – there are plenty of other options, whether your intention is to get you noticed or fly under the radar, from the serious athlete out to smash his PB, to the showman lining up a humble brag on social media.

1.  Finish-Line Focused

Want to set the pace and beat the rest? If you’re taking it seriously, go for an ultra-breathable adidas Performance Freelift Climacool Muscle Tee, and a pair of Response Shorts which allow for complete movement, whether you’re bustling up the hills or sprinting down the straights. Keep track of your time with a clever bit of wrist furniture, like the FitBit Versa Watch Black Aluminium.

2. Colour Coordinated

In it for the good times rather than the winning times? Want to stand out from the crowds not follow them? The bright orange Nike Breathe Tailwind SS Top could be the answer, especially with some Camo Ultra Shorts from The Upside below. A pair of Nike Free RN Flyknit 2018 Running Shoes will add a few extra shades of Insta-friendly colour as well.

3. Cool Runnings

Whether you’re at the latest laneway speakeasy or casually competing in the world’s biggest fun run, for the image savvy, all black is always the way to go. A WPN Arrowhead T-Shirt and a pair of Puma Heritage Tape Track Shorts provide plenty of understated cool, and you can cap off the rock-star-turned-runner look with a pair of Puma Enzo Running Shoes.
