Surely when it comes to meeting your significant other’s parents, impressing them should be simple – be polite, say thank you, and as long as they can see that you have your partner’s best interests at heart, you’ll get along swimmingly, right?

Not entirely. Manners are only half the battle. Everybody knows it's what's underneath that counts, but we're visual beings and looking presentable, polished, and approval-worthy definitely helps. You need a couple of ensembles that fit the bill of any occasion. Nobody wants to be the guy in a suit and tie at a picnic, so we've put together a few essentials to help you on your way to win hearts, no matter the setting.

THE FAMILY BBQ

Result! You've been let off the hook by meeting the parents at a barbecue: no one will expect you to dress up one bit. Aim for comfort so that you can sit anywhere and wear something that you won't mind getting a bit of grass or tomato sauce on, but even though it’s a casual outing it’s best to err on the side of smart-casual with a short-sleeved shirt. Our top tip is to add a watch to the ensemble. A striking design is a great conversation-starter with the guys, plus it’s always nice to be the guy with the time (and you certainly don’t want to be late.)

DRINKS AND DINNER

So you're meeting at a bar or a restaurant. Easy! As long as the venue’s not too fancy, your favourite pair of clean chinos is a great place to start. It doesn't hurt, however, to add a little extra, such as a well-tailored blazer or a nice pair of shoes. Just remember the rule of balance: if you’re going to dress up with a blazer, keep the outfit grounded with a pair of sneakers or casual brogues.

FORMAL DINNER

Oh boy. While this situation might seem high-pressure (and high expectations for that matter), it's potentially the easiest to navigate sartorially. Keep it simple with a navy or charcoal suit with a staple white or blue button up. For a contemporary take, opt for suiting separates, but if you are going for a suit jacket with a light pattern, just ensure you pair it with a plain trouser. Steer your look away from workwear by avoiding black or pinstriped suits, and black shoes.

As for your tie, it's usually best just to ask your partner. We're not here to do business, after all.
