Winter escapes. They are the best kind of break for two reasons: because you get to leave behind the cold weather, and because you know that while you’re baking in the heat, your mates are stalking your feed for enviable holiday updates.

The only bad thing about these holidays is that for months and months they seem to be a distant future dream. That is until you suddenly realise you’re due to leave the next day and you haven’t organised a thing.

To make it a great escape, there are a number of essentials you need to plan for, and not just how you’re going to be able to watch the footy highlights while you’re away.

Most important, of course, is what you’re going to wear. And while there’s a temptation to not think about it until the last minute, and to then just chuck everything into a bag in the hope your suitcase will produce a range of solid outfits for you like some kind of fashion slow cooker, the reality isn’t quite so simple.

After all, there are genuine worries. Like what it is you have to wear at check-in to guarantee a free upgrade to business, and whether it’s acceptable to wear boardies and thongs at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

So here are a few must-haves for a well-turned-out tripper, to make the trip turn out well.

So here are a few must-haves for a well-turned-out tripper, to make the trip turn out well.

1. Joint top with your passport, sunglasses are just about the most important thing you need to remember to pack for your hols. Clear frames are the way to go this year, with these seriously cool Thread Etiquette Ghost Sunglasses hitting the right note.

2. Always sharp and yet still somehow casual, the polo shirt is the answer to many a holiday’s most urgent questions, such as, what should I wear to the beach? And, what should I wear when I’m strolling around the town looking in the souvenir shops? And, what should I wear to dinner? This Cerruti Striped Polo Shirt is the answer to them all, of course.

3. Versatile enough to go with either a smart shirt or a casual tee, chino shorts need a place in your case. As equally fitting for breakfast at the hotel, drinks on the beach or dinner out on the town, these Polo Ralph Lauren Greenwich Chino Shorts combine a classic look with a modern feel.

4. Whether you’ll be heading to the beach or lying by the pool, don’t forget to pack a pair of swimmers. For something stylish in the water, go for these Mixed Dot Shorts from Nikben.

5. Gone are the days when sandals were the preserve of sunburnt dads who had learnt somewhere that they had to be worn with a pair of shin-high flannel socks. Nowadays, these Arizona Birkenstocks are an easy option for both beach days and club nights. Just leave the socks at home.
