For those not familiar with the term – neutrals refer to the range of muted colours that span from cream to charcoal grey. Think of earthy shades like khaki, camel, sand, beige – you get the drift. These colours are considered neutral because they’re neither bright nor strong. That being said, they’re essential colours to include in a well-rounded wardrobe because they’re trans-seasonal and timeless, and are handy when it comes to tying a look together.

It’s rare for some outfits to really flow without some sort of neutral included. Some men are flamboyant enough to make a printed shirt and shorts combo work, but for the rest of us, the idea of too much colour and pattern is a little out of our comfort zone. That’s where neutrals come into play. Take the same printed shirt and pair it with cream chinos and you have yourself an outfit that flows. Same goes for the printed shorts. Add a neutral shirt to the mix and suddenly the idea of wearing loud prints become less daunting.

If you’ve got prints down pat, the next neutral look to try is donning it from top-to-toe. Forget the idea of beige being boring. A tonal outfit is one of the key trends this season, and opting for a neutral colour palette is the easiest way to get the look. Sure, if you don’t include a mix of textures then dressing in one plain colour will look bland, especially if that colour is beige. Instead, consider stripes, different fabrics and accessories when trying neutrals in one look. Playing with textures is easiest when colour is taken out of the mix, which makes this look easier to achieve than you think.
