When it comes to the Spring Racing Carnival, we can all agree that the best part is getting dressed up, and with the creative fashion at the races, there’s always plenty of fun to be had in the wardrobe.

For 2017, we say take the creativity a little further and go beyond the traditional race day dress code with contemporary racewear separates. Not only can you achieve the same feminine style as your favourite race day dress, but you can also use the pieces separately for future outfits. Now that’s a practical purchase we can get behind, instead of the cluster of one-hit-wonders we’ve all racked up (literally).

We’ve done the hard work for you and put together our four favourite looks for the formal separates trend.

1. A MATCHING SET

If you want the head-to-toe appeal of a dress, combined with the versatility of separate pieces, then a matching set is your perfect go to. Whether you choose bold florals or nautical stripes, co-ords are super on trend and means one less decision to make when it comes to matching individual pieces. If your matching set is on the bold side, opt for pared back accessories, and simple hair and makeup.

2. MONOCHROME

A monochrome look is not only chic, but also incredibly easy to navigate when it comes to matching pieces. Depending on your preference for a striking or subtle look, black and white is not only adaptable to your style but also perfect for Derby Day’s black and white dress code. For a sleek, polished look, keep silhouettes long with flowing fabrics, or switch it up by adding plenty of texture, bold structure and movement for maximum impact.

3. COLOURFUL AND CLASHING

Everybody wants to be noticed on the field, so take your outfit up a notch with bright colours, clashing prints, and bold accessories. Ticking off this season’s Havana Haze trend, this look is perfect for Melbourne Cup Day’s colourful and jubilant dress code. We promise it’s easier to pull off than it sounds - check out our clashing prints how-to, and for accessories, pick out accent colours in the separates.

4. HIGH DRAMA

Throw the less-is-more rule out the window here, and clash standout pieces for an ultra modern, dramatic take on racewear. Think structure, striking shapes and billowing silhouettes, with plenty of texture and interesting details. Cinch in the waist to avoid the outfit wearing you, and be fashion forward with your choice of headwear, by opting for a metallic headband or architectural millinery.

While racewear separates are great for creating your own individuality at the races, just keep racewear rules and traditions (nothing too short) respectfully in mind, and you’ll be a style standout at any race event.
