San Francisco – the city whose name the locals won’t shorten – is the home to the Full House we all grew up on, the crazy steep roads that movies are made of and some of the best food you’ll find in California. It’s the town where a casual run turns into an endurance effort thanks to the hills. They serve fried chicken by the bucket and negronis straight up, no ice. The heart of the Summer of Love, it’s a place where there’s plenty to do. Here’s (some) of our picks.

The Painted Ladies thanks to @dianadelorenzi

The Golden Gate thanks to @derickblyt

Spend … The whole day at SFMOMA. Open every day bar Wednesdays.

Vintage shop … In Valencia and Mission. You’ll need excess baggage on the way home, for sure.

Be sure to hit … City Lights Books on Columbus just up from Fisherman’s Wharf. Upstairs, you’re find a whole corner of Bukowski and won’t leave without a classic (or eight).

Be sure to … Play tourist. Hire a bike and ride over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. Stay for lunch and catch the ferry home.

Eat … Hotdogs – note the plural – at a Giants game. Also: oysters at Swan Oyster Depot but be sure to get in early (We’re talking 11am. Otherwise, the lines are around the block). And: the linguini at Tosca café in North Beach.

Stay out late at … Any dive bar. These are what SF is known for. Try Mission’s El Rio or Chinatown’s Bow Bow Cocktail Lounge. Or, if you’re looking for something a little more fancy, try BIX supper club just down from Chinatown.

Sightsee… Fisherman’s Wharf. Spot the seals or book a tour of Alcatraz – be sure to book in advance though, it fills up fast.
