The Rise Of Neo-Yogi

Sports-luxe just got sprouted.

"If I can't meditate in the morning, I just meditate in a back alleyway in a parked car next to a dumpster," wellness guru Amanda Chantal Bacon was quoted saying. This kind of attitude to self-care may as well be our modern day spiritual mantra. Enlightenment’s got a new groove and it’s slightly more realistic than a life alone, cross-legged up some mountain. Our chaotic, high-tech, urban existence has given rise to a different kind of daily ritual, one that has revitalised our wardrobe. Checklist for our essentials currently on high-rotation: flexible, easy breathing and nearly-naked seams (like we are not even wearing clothes at all). Enter: the dawn of neo-yogi dressing. Sports-luxe just got sprouted.

If the Sanskrit translation of yoga literally means union then the spirit and material worlds have never been so close-knit. Our inward bliss is leaking outwards and overflowing into street style. Where athleisure was all about performance enhancing details: speed stripes, yang power and futuristic zips; neo-yogi is more about comfort, yin sensuality and glow. Everyday wears that still challenge the body, yet quiet the mind with simple cuts and lightness of being textures. Adidas by Stella McCartney pretty much pioneered the genre.

The cult sports leggings that have been everyone’s throw-on-and-go are transcending into a bike short hem or should we say Bikram-inspired hot pants. Kim Kardashian may be able to lay claim to this micro-trend but we prefer model Kelsey Martinovich’s nod to namaste in seam-free shorties and a velvet sweat.

If wearing leggings as pants, opt for shirting with attitude – crisp button-ups or high-impact hoodies. The secret to integrating your meditation-wear outside the studio is juxtaposition. Pair a denim jacket and a yogi crop with embellished slides, or a coat and Matrix-style ankle boots with your spandex. It’s a newfangled remix. Dark has always been the safer choice for activewear but our colour spectrum is being upgraded for more illuminated fabrics as we become comfortable with showing off our curves not slimming them down. White, after all, lights up our aura rather than black absorbing other’s energies.

Our natural gravitation towards this combo of street and soul seems to be an effort to bring balance to our always-on lifestyles. As buzzwords like mindfulness spike on Google and alt-healing modalities are becoming the norm, more crowds seem to be dipping their toes into the yogic waters. Choosing a practice these days is just like going to the ice cream store. Vinyasa, Hatha, Kundalini, Bikram, hip-hop and some. There’s a flavour for whatever holistic hit you’re craving. And now you don’t have to take a change of clothes for after class.
