As we head into warmer weather, our beloved spring dresses are finally coming back out to play. It’s time to shed the dark colours of winter and incorporate more colour into our wardrobes, so what better way to do this than with prints, the flavour of the season. When it comes to printed dresses, the sartorial matchmaking possibilities are endless, so here are our top five favourite printed dresses, and how you can wear them this season.

1. SPOTS

The spotted trend made a comeback again this season, with polka-dot prints popping up in a number of different collections, and this time we’re giving it a chic and polished twist.

By nature, spots are a youthful print, so giving a mature edge is an interesting take on the trend. Spots generally look best on their own, so pair with monochromatic neutrals – or, if you want to push the envelope, pair with more spots. For an elegant look, channel the Amalfi Coast and opt for a black and white spotted dress, paired with statement gold jewellery and a red lip.

2. Stripes

Stripes are so versatile and flexible that they are almost a neutral on their own, so clashing them with other prints is fool proof. In terms of a striped dress, there’s nothing more flattering or elegant than a maxi dress with thin, vertical stripes; a piece that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Navy and white striped dresses are great for a nautical look, but if classical isn’t your cup of tea, opt for bright and punchy stripes. Clash with colourful, statement accessories to keep things exciting.

3. Floral

When thinking of an outfit that’s feminine, girly, and fun, a floral dress is the first thing that comes to mind. They’re flattering, versatile, and super easy to pair with just about anything.

However, if going girly isn’t really ‘you’, play down the prettiness of a floral dress with a cool pair of sneakers, perfect for adding a street-smart edge. Oversized, boyfriend denim jackets are also great for toughening up the look, and a branded sports cap can bring a sportier vibe to the outfit.

4. Leopard

Admittedly, leopard print dresses have had tacky connotations in the past (who could forget Eva Longoria’s plethora of leopard print in Desperate Housewives?) We’ve learnt from our mistakes though, and much to our good fortune, leopard print dresses have seen a revival, now in downplayed, less flashy silhouettes. Make a leopard print dress work by opting for more relaxed, chilled out styles, and avoid that ‘too tight’ look at any cost.

We love how a navy pinstripe blazer looks with a leopard print dress – just add mules for an elevated office look. For a more casual take, pair with slides or sneakers and layer a white, unbuttoned blouse on top.

5. Stars

Star prints have been trending for a while now and, we’re happy to say, they going away anytime soon. When we combine cheeky stars with flirtatious dresses, it’s not hard to see why.

A star printed mini dress is a wardrobe essential of any it-girl: simply pair with sock boots and a pageboy hat for a modern look. For a laid-back look, add in white sneakers, a cropped denim jacket, and a sports cap. You don’t want to inadvertently end up looking like the American flag though, so avoid wearing stars with stripes.
