A change in season is the perfect time to switch up your hair. Whether it’s a fresh hue, a more effortless style or perhaps curtain bangs, there are plenty of options for a hair refresh. But with the summer heat comes humidity, so it’s worth looking to the experts for lightweight, breezy styles that will work in a speedy summer routine.
From the beach-ready bob to Gen Z hair colouring and the must-have hair tool for summertime styling, ghd’s National Education Manager, Jordan Thomas, is here to take us through this season’s hottest trends – all approved for withstanding long days in the summer heat.

The Rachel 2022
“It’s not breaking news that there is a renaissance of the 90s and Y2K trends in the hair and beauty space. And with this, we are seeing the resurgence of one of the most famous haircuts in pop culture history: ‘The Rachel’ from Friends. This summer ‘The Rachel’ feels more like Hailey Bieber meets Miley Cyrus, taking 90s-inspired layers and making them feel choppier and more textured – giving ‘The Rachel’ a 90s grunge edge. This paired with an expensive-looking deep brunette colour is a surefire way to modernise this iconic style.”
“To style, think about emulating the effortless, lived-in feel of the shag cut. I would recommend using the ghd pick me up, root lift spray and misting it through the mid-lengths and ends to focus on giving you width vs height. Volume doesn’t just go up, it goes out. Use the ghd rise volumizing hot brush to perfectly sculpt the style.”

Soft Hollywood Glamour
“We’ve been seeing softer, more touchable, brushed-out waves as opposed to the structured, set, crisp waves of the golden age of Hollywood. When achieving this style, prep is everything. To avoid brushing your curls into a soft wave and have them disappear, starting on the right foundation is crucial. Mist ghd curly ever after, curl hold spray before styling to ensure hold for up to 24 hours. Curl your hair in the same direction using the ghd soft curl tong and once completed use the ghd paddle brush to bring all the hair together in one flowing, soft, movement. If you’re working on short hair, like a bob, use the ghd gold styler vertically and push the styler towards the floor when curling to retain length.”

The Bob
“Whether it’s the ‘bixie’, ‘the boyfriend bob’ or a striking 20s-inspired sharp chin-length cut, the bob is going to be everywhere for spring summer 22/23. My prediction for the ultimate bob trend this summer will be the grunge bob, which has a laid-back aesthetic and will be perfect for embracing natural waves and textures after long days at the beach and allowing your hair to dry naturally. What I love about this look is that can be cut shorter to feel more androgynous or grazing your collarbone, with subtle layers to keep it softer and more feminine.”

Natural
“The no-trend-trend of wearing your hair how it wants to sit and embracing your natural beauty will also be a huge hit this summer. There are a lot of myths around heat styling and I think it’s fair to say that everyone craves healthy hair. The biggest misconception when it comes to natural and healthy hair is air drying. That’s actually more damaging than using a hair dryer. The reason being is when your hair gets wet it’s like a sponge and it swells, which can buckle the outer layer of your hair, the cuticle. If you’re wanting to wear your hair in all of its natural glory and look after its integrity, you are better off using a diffuser to dry your hair on a low speed and medium heat setting. Damage only occurs when you are over-drying. Get your hair to around 90% dry and then leave it to air dry.”

Curtain Bangs
“We will see a return of the curtain fringe that sits in a centre part with the perfect peek-a-boo sweep that frames your face and eyes beautifully. This a great fringe to try for those who are apprehensive about cutting one in as you can opt for a grown-out look which means you’re already halfway there if you do decide to grow it out.”
“The longer you have your fringe, the better it is for summer. If you’re someone who likes to tie your hair up and keep it away from your face in the hotter months, you can still pin it up to avoid forehead tan lines and sweaty strands.”

Rich Copper
“We have seen ‘expensive brunette’ as a major trend earlier this year, pioneered by Hailey Bieber, and I keep this in mind as people head to the salon to do the cliché ‘blonde for summer’ – having deep, rich mahogany tones applied to your hair each trip to the salon, the transition to blonde will be a journey. With this in mind, coppers could become prominent this season as it is impossible to lift from brunette to blonde without exposing warmer tones. If you don’t have the time (or money) to book your colourist for an entire day, rich copper could be the perfect way to work towards your blonde ambitions.”

Colour Blocking
“If you’re wanting to take more of a Gen Z approach, I’m also forecasting a continuous rise of colour-blocking hair, sported by the likes of Dua Lipa. Think obvious panels of contrasting colours. Essentially the complete opposite to subtle contouring, but still working from a few months of expensive-looking brunette.”

Style Trends
“The must-have hair tool for summer 2022 is the ghd soft curl tong. Its 32mm barrel will lend itself to pretty much all the trends we have discussed. Tongs and wands can be super versatile when you know how to use them. Remember the golden rule of flat wrap vs twist wrap. If you wrap your hair flat around the barrel, you will always create a spiral (curl) but when you twist the hair, almost creating a rope-like texture, around the barrel you create a left-to-right movement (wave). For more of an effortless, undone result, simply leave the ends out, and for a polished Hollywood bombshell moment seal the ends with the clamp.”
