Linen is synonymous with Italian swagger. It’s the fabric choice worn on super-yachts, while sipping aperitifs and for non-tourists in the coastal town of Positano. But thanks to the general relaxation of dress codes everywhere, linen is sneaking into our suitcases while on vacation and travelling back home with us to become the smarter style choice.

We all know a great jumping-off point is to introduce a white linen shirt to pep up your summer wares but there’s so much more to this fresh fabric than just beating the heat. We zoomed in on the streets of Milan to pick up the gentleman tricks that uplevel your linen game to kingpin.

High vis

A larger-than-life sports watch worn unusually low on the wrist, notably lower than your blazer cuff. High-visibility is key here. Try this out at a wedding while wearing a classic shade of tan linen suit and deck shoes for the wow factor without really trying.

Sneak around

Luckily we no longer have to sneak around the subject of sports shoes in office. They are practically a 9-5 utility these days given the commute. But there is a special air about you when your wardrobe is looking pretty boss. So blend both worlds like the Milanese. Wear a navy linen suit, checkered office-approps shirt and tie with a streamlined pair of navy sneakers like New Balance. Keep some tan brogues in the messenger bag should that client meeting get scheduled.

Precious cargo

Another 90s comeback to love: cargo trousers. This look has grown up somewhat since the oversized logo tees and skate shoes combo. Instead, dress the lo-fi sand cargos with a blue linen shirt and grey tie. A double-breasted blazer in a palette flattering colour like stone will tip this ensemble over from casual to suitably formal. If you're really getting into this Italian groove, ditch the socks for a bare ankle with a desert brogue.

Hi / lo

Try this on for size. Navy linen shirt on white linen pants with khaki green workman’s jacket. Accessories are what will turn this strange fusion into a winning look. Add a brown leather belt and translucent acrylic 1970s-style frames for Insta-cool. The juxtaposition of the workwear jacket and suave linen is on point.
