We’re craving less screen time, less fuss, less hustle. We’re on the hunt for the easy like Sunday morning in all areas of our lives. We want the real and the ready-to-go, a pared-back kind of pretty. The kind whose price is two minutes, not two hours. There are, after all, better things you can be doing with your life than contouring.

In 2014, we saw the rise and rise of the #nomakeup selfie. Far from breaking news, it was a reminder that our daily routine, our rituals, needed a little time under the microscope. The shows just gone served as yet another reminder as clean-look skin walked the runways of Milan, London and Paris.

The trick to this look? Healthy skin. It’s less about the cover up, more about the confidence just to be.

“I can’t think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself,” said Emma Stone when asked what true beauty was.

Turns out mum was right: it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Feel that inside of yours with a healthy, plant-filled diet, your requisite eight (plus) glasses of water on the daily and plenty of sleep and exercise.

Skin Matrix’s founder Sarah Wilkinson, a holistic skin specialist with close on two decades in the game, shares how to bring your A-game in the skin department. With summer fast on way, there’s never been a better time to streamline for your beauty routine.

“Lo-fi beauty is all about achieving the skin you desire in a minimalist beauty routine,” Wilkinson she says.

Clear out those cupboards
The first step, she says, it to declutter. Get rid of the potions and lotions that are eating all your time. Make sure your morning routine is power-packed. Less can well and truly be more.

“Bring it all back to basics without scrimping on the quality of ingredients.”

So, where to start?

Choose products that pack a punch
Wilkinson says to go for an antioxidant moisturiser.

“Moisturiser that contain the super ingredients serums contain is a way decluttering your beauty regime. Combine the vitamins and minerals you would normally use in serums into your moisturiser to ensure your skin is nourished and fed all the essential ingredients necessary to combat the ageing process and encourage cellular regeneration.”

The makings of this magic potion, she tips, are Vitamin E, A, C and B, peptides, green tea and resveratrol.

Cull your makeup
But the spring clean doesn’t stop there.

“Say goodbye to your collection of liquid makeup, primers and SPFs,” says Wilkinson. “Instead, enjoy an all-in-one BB cream. This will give you supreme coverage, plus ticks the boxes for sunscreen protection and primer.”

The same comes to the rest of your stash.

And scrub up
A weekly exfoliation effort will keep your skin glowing and fresh. It’s important, though, to choose a product that works for your skin type and schedule.

“Keep exfoliating super simple by looking for a granular exfoliator that combines its magic with AHAs or fruit acids. Not only will your skin receive the benefits from manually removing dead skin cells, the AHAs will soften the intercellular glue to encourage a more efficient exfoliation. This is a sure-fire way of getting the glow we all crave.”
