2017 was huge. When you look back through the year, comparing some of the biggest moments – from celebrity scandals to baby buzz, royal engagements, and Australia finally saying “yes” – to what we were wearing almost seems insignificant. That is until you realise why you started wearing them in the first place. As much as some people deny they follow trends, there’s a good chance they picked it up from somewhere without even realising.

Here’s where you got your style from in 2017:

2017 was huge. When you look back through the year, comparing some of the biggest moments – from celebrity scandals to baby buzz, royal engagements, and Australia finally saying “yes” – to what we were wearing almost seems insignificant. That is until you realise why you started wearing them in the first place. As much as some people deny they follow trends, there’s a good chance they picked it up from somewhere without even realising.

Here’s where you got your style from in 2017:

Despacito

It was the most played music video for the year and it’s reflected in our Latin-influenced fashion trends. This year we warmed up our wardrobes with a little Havana heat, giving tropical a new look and feel with bright colours, ruffles and more. The trend really took off with the release of DJ Khaled’s Wild Thoughts track featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, which made us fall in love with off-the-shoulder tops, head scarves and hoop earrings all over again.

Red Hot

Red was undoubtedly the colour of the year, spanning everything from statement accessories to swimsuits and top-to-toe outfits. We can thank a few people for this, including Helen Lasichanh at the Met Gala, Rihanna at the Valerian premiere, and Alexandra Daddario on the set of Baywatch.

The Year of the Ear(rings)

There were more than a few nods to the ‘80s this year but none as head-turning as oversized earrings. A dramatic change from last year’s fine chain thread-through designs, 2017 was all about going all out with tassels, jewels and abstract shapes. If you’re looking for inspiration, no one went quite as OTT with this trend like Queen Bey.

Pull Up Your Socks

We’ve developed a bit of a love/hate relationship with this deconstructed shoe trend, sported by almost every stylish celeb under the sun. We love the uber-comfortable, second-skin fit, but we’re not too fond of the DIY designs that spawned from it. If you’re going to try this trend, leave the socks and sandpaper out of it.

Throw Some Shade

With brands like Quay Australia teaming up with the likes of Kylie Jenner, Desi Perkins and more, it’s no wonder sunglasses are one of our highest selling accessories of the year. More than just providing sun protection, the most stylish designs for the year are anything retro. Our favourites are tinted aviators and oval frames.

There was a lot more that happened this year, like our obsession with the grey boyfriend blazer, the return of ‘90s heritage brands, and North West making us want to rock Old Skool Vans again, but these were by far our favourites.
