Jane Lane from Daria

Jane does not get the credit she deserves. As Daria Morgendorffer’s sardonic-but-wise best friend, Jane was not only a brilliant character, but a well-dressed one too. Her stockings and shorts combo was ahead of its time, while her high lace-up boots and burgundy overshirt were both practical and on-trend. But Jane was low-key a master of accessories. She has a triple ear piercing, rocked small sunglasses some two decades before Kendall Jenner did, and was rarely without her plum lip shade.

Goldie Hawn

Legendary actress and purveyor of curtain bangs, Goldie Hawn made some of her most iconic, hilarious and stylish films in the 1990s. From her inspired use of aerobics leotards outside the gym (the woman basically invented athleisure) in Housesitter, to her excellent body-con dress in Death Becomes Her and, of course, her luxe normcore aesthetic as Elise Elliot in The First Wives Club. Off-screen, she was style goals too – she once wore a black leotard, high-waisted jeans and a bum-bag on a day out in NYC with daughter Kate Hudson.

Legends Of The Fall-era Brad Pitt

Was this the pinnacle of Brad Pitt’s style? It’s definitely up there. By far his greatest foray into long hair, Pitt rocked a cowboy hat and scrappy cotton shirt in the 1994 Western drama. But around that era, his red-carpet game was truly the stuff of a legend. At the premiere of Legends Of The Fall, Pitt balanced his bleached blonde hair with an oversized grey knit, faded jeans and desert boots. It remains a thing of beauty.

Adam Sandler

Look at any guy in any hipster suburb, anywhere in Australia and there’s a pretty good chance he looks like a Billy Madison extra. Sandler’s skate-influenced ‘90s style is the perfect summer all-rounder. A printed or corduroy overshirt, white crew-cut tees with double denim, a branded baseball cap – we bet you never spotted the influence, but we guarantee now it’s all you’ll ever see.

Daniel Johns from Silverchair

Kurt Cobain may be the go-to Rockstar style icon for the rest of the world, but here in Australia we had Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns. We’re take-it-or-leave-it on the eyebrow piercing, but the rest – his preppy shirts, printed tees, baggy utility pants and yellow-tinted sunglasses – ensured his place on teenage bedroom walls, and the annals of muso style history.

A still from the movie It Takes Two featuring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen via IMDB

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in It Takes Two

Obviously this 1995 film is complete and utter perfection (and a rip-off of The Parent Trap but honestly, whatever), but the respective wardrobes of Amanda Lemmon (Mary-Kate) and Alyssa Callaway (Ashley) provide on-going inspiration to style-confused ladies the world over. At least that’s what we assume. Amanda’s backwards caps and printed sundresses wouldn’t look out of place on your Insta feed, and Alyssa’s floral embellished suit is perhaps not real-world wearable but a fierce look nonetheless. Their matching overalls ensembles is the truest sign of friendship.
