Every year we make the same New Year’s resolution – to get fit or go to the gym more – and every year we find ourselves failing by the first week of February. But 2019 different will be different. We might have the same goal, but this year our fitness resolution won’t sound like a nagging chore, something we know we should do but for some reason will do anything in our power to avoid doing it, instead we’re making it fun and exciting.

If you know spending money on a gym membership won’t motivate you to actually go, no matter how expensive it might be, then stop throwing away your money and find a workout you enjoy doing. Here’s our top picks just to get the ball rolling:

Go for long walkies

Add a fluffy pupper to your family for more incentive or volunteer to be a dog walker for a friend, a neighbour, a stranger or your nearest shelter – it helps to have a workout companion – especially one that you don’t have to compete with or one that won’t bail on you. You’ll be able to go at your own pace (or the dog’s) and any effort, no matter how big or small, to get active counts as a step towards reaching your goal.

Try alternative classes

If you know you’re not the least bit interested in lifting weights or squatting a hundred times over, then skip the usual gym offerings and get creative with your sweat sessions instead. Dance classes are great way to get the blood pumping but if you’re looking to tone up then give pole dancing a go. There’s more to it than just shimmying around a pole and there are plenty of studios around that focus on the fitness aspect, if sexy isn’t your thing.

Channel your inner child

Remember when you were a kid you’d tire yourself out from hours spent jumping on a trampoline? Well why not do that now as an adult? It’s just as fun but this time you can appreciate the amount of energy just 10 minutes of bouncing takes up. There are places that offer guided trampoline workouts or you can bounce around at home. Once you get the hang of it you’ll soon find yourself obsessed with other acrobatic activities, like gymnastics, trapeze and lyra – they’re all fun to do and will tick off your “get fit” goal without you even realising you’re working out.

So, what are you waiting for? Add some fun activewear to your wardrobe and get excited to work out.
