Making the decision to go on a beach-bound road trip is easy, it’s planning what to take with you that’s the tricky part. You could just wing it and live in your swimmers all week long but to avoid any hiccups along the way here’s a few handy tips.

1. Pack at least two pairs of swimmers, that way you’ll always have a dry option to slip into.

2. Be sun smart. Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses should always be in your beach kit so don’t forget to take them with you on holiday. Even if you’ve scoped out shelter options in the area it’s always a good idea to bring your own pop-up tent. You never know how popular the place might get so you don’t want to be left out in the sun.

3. Don’t go overboard with everyday outfits. Pack styles that you can pair back with your bathers. Guys, printed boardshorts look great with plain button-up shirts and ladies, pair your swimsuits with denim cut-offs, like these, and you’re good to go.

4. Same goes for shoes. Bring a pair of rubber thongs if the shorelines look rocky, sneakers for any impromptu adventures and an alternative option if you go out at night.

5. Bring a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of lightweight pants. Even if the weather forecast is for sunny days there’s a chance it can cool down quickly as soon as the sun sets.

6. Consider your evening activities. If you’re thinking of grabbing dinner and drinks somewhere then you’ll need a decent set of clothes. This means a linen shirt and canvas sneakers for men and a summer dress and leather sandals for the women.

6. A good book to get stuck into – your beach break is the perfect opportunity to put your phones down. See here for our recommended reads.

7. Games to play and we don’t mean the digital kind. Ball games are always a good idea but if it’s way too hot be running around then you can always have water races on the back of inflatable animals.
