Most Aussies have no idea what Mexico’s Cinco de Mayo Festival is about, but that doesn’t stop us from joining in on the celebration in increasing numbers. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. It’s not a war that features heavily in our school curriculum, but it’s hard to turn down any excuse to drink tequila and eat Mexican food.

So where are the best places to go to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year if you can’t make it to Mexico? We recommend seeking out the more authentic bars and eateries, so you can experience the real culture instead of just a bucket of Coronas and some Old El Paso tacos. Here’s our pick of the best places to get a taste of Mexico this May 5.

Bodega Underground, Melbourne

Bodega Underground - Melbourne, Vic

This Melbourne institution stays open until 3am, and serves Mexican style tacos and cocktails rimmed with specialty salts made with exotic ingredients like grasshopper or worms.

Mamasita - Melbourne, Vic

One of Melbourne’s first and most authentic Mexican bars and restaurants will be the place to be on Cinco de Mayo. Work your way through the amazing selection of tequila and mescal. Just maybe not in one night.

Tio’s Cerveceria - Surry Hills, NSW

Sydney institution Tio’s is as close as the city has to an authentic Mexican cantina. Drink cold Mexican beer at the communal tables or order an icy tequila-based cocktail.

Tequila Mockingbird - Paddington, NSW

The Paddington eatery is churning out $5 tacos on Cinco de Mayo and $10 margaritas, but it’s their selection of tequila we’re most excited about—27 different tequilas reside behind their bar!

Los Hermanos Mexican Taqueria - Brunswick, Vic

This Brunswick Taqueria delivers big on authentic Mexican street food culture. It’s a lively venue, specializing in Mexican barbecue or “barbacoa”.

El Sabor - North Melbourne, Vic

There’s more to Mexican food than tacos and burritos, and you haven’t lived until you’ve tried the complex flavours of mole. El Sabor does a three course mole degustation that will make you addicted to this rich, painstakingly prepared dish.

Celebrating at home?

Try making a Michelada this Cinco de Mayo with your favourite Mexican beer. It’s a refreshing mix between a beer and a Bloody Mary, with a good dash of lime juice thrown in and chilli salt around the rim. Tip: if you can find Clamato juice use it instead of tomato juice. The clam flavour is a lot more palatable than it sounds!
