Why Tanks Are The Eternal Staple

Our minimalist uniform since forever.

Best expressed with blue jeans and a healthy glow. When scaling back your wardrobe for the warmer seasons, the tank is the staple to commit to. It’s nothing you don’t know already. Supermodels have been utilising this minimalist uniform since forever. Paired with any kind of denim it’s got ‘find me backstage' all over it. Our 90s style icons with names like Gwyneth, Winona and Julia wore it always in white. But, most notably it was SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw that showed us how versatile the simple basic was. With tulle, in yellow, short shorts, layered, floral midi-skirts, lycra. Who can forget that theme song’s bus splash moment? After that, the tank was a bonafide addition to whatever you had planned (as long as the dress code was casual).

Traditionally speaking, the cut was created for intimate-wear. Light ribbed cotton that serves as a warmer second-skin under your daily edit. Which ironically is the same trait that also makes it practical to embrace wise sun interaction.

The perfect laid-back ingredient to a hazy afternoon picnic. Collarbone exposed. 50s hemline midi-skirt preferred. Something so stripped back like the undershirt gives the wearer an air of untucked confidence. Just me, myself and my tank. The ideal canvas to show off say a pendant necklace (this season’s idée fixe).

To reimagine this essential in a current context – try linen trousers with sneakers. Throw-over an unbuttoned shirt if the weather permits. Choices range from chesty style (hello Ryan off the OC) to spaghetti strap, but white is eternally cool as musician Patricia Manfield demonstrates on insta.

And like all good dressing philosophies, there’s always an exception to the rule. To transition this look to an after-dark setting – leather is your fail-safe. A glossy texture will amplify the casual top and enrich its simplicity. Shiny cigarette pants or a knee-length skirt are on point. Easy elegance with a pair of studs and an up-do. Throw caution to the wind when intermixing vibrant colours and a late night affair. Because of the lax nature of the tank there’s a fine line between Carrie certified and a Paris Hilton flashback.
