LWG Certified Leather
Leather is a durable material that can be used for an array of products from clothing to accessories. In order for it to be so hard-wearing it must be tanned. This conventionally involves the use of harmful chemicals.
The conventional method of tanning results in damaging impacts to the environment as well as health issues to the workers in tanneries and surrounding communities. If not managed, chemicals can be discarded and released into water systems, resulting in polluted waterways and surrounding environments. When humans come into contact with these chemicals, they can suffer serious health concerns.
THE ICONIC is committed to supporting responsible leather manufacturing across the globe and that is why we are a proud member of the Leather Working Group (LWG).
The LWG aims to improve the leather manufacturing industry by creating alignment on environmental priorities, bringing visibility to best practices and providing suggested guidelines for continual improvement.
By encouraging this improvement in areas such as waste and chemical management, energy use and water consumption, the LWG is helping to foster a more sustainable production process for all leather goods in the future.
Another alternative to the conventional method is vegetable tanning, which is the practice of using natural materials during the tanning process such as tree bark. Look out for shoes and accessories which use this process.
