Founded in 1972 in New York City by renegade Robert Muller, PONY has enjoyed a rich and varied history in the sportive spotlight. Synonymous with achievement and style, the PONY brand has launched again after a temporary hiatus—sticking true to the rebellious spirit that initially boosted the brand.

Alongside Muller’s apt prediction that casual sportswear would be the new wardrobe staple. The lineage of the brand is intrinsically linked to pinnacle events in US sporting history. Soccer player Pelé, who has been dubbed the greatest soccer player in the world, scored his 1300th goal in PONY sneakers. Similarly, the underdog Oakland Raiders won the 1976 Super Bowl all wearing PONY. Eventually, the PONY brand had been worn by champion athletes in almost every major popular sport, including the World Cup, the NFL, the Super Bowl and the NBA Championship.

Muller envisioned sneakers as staples for on and off the court, which at the time was not en vogue. This pioneering vision laid the groundwork for the established streetwear and sports luxe markets that are firmly entrenched today. The target market in mind was always in keeping with Muller’s own rebellious spirit; the sneakers were aimed at the underdog athlete, the coolest kid on the block and those with vision. The current creative director is hip hop icon Joey Bada$$, who has injected a fresh perspective to the relaunched label.
