Our Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing Strategy

During 2018 we ran a structured process of engagement internally and externally to collaboratively design our 2020 Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing Strategy, including 10 workshops involving 100 ICONIC team members. The output is a plan that has ownership from the newest team member through to the CEO.

Ethical Sourcing

Our objective

By 2020 we will be positively and transparently contributing to the improvement of social and environmental conditions in our private label supply chain and have implemented minimum criteria for brands to encourage them to do the same.

Key activities

• Maintain a strong human rights due diligence system in our own brands, including a publicly available factory list
• Drive uptake of sustainable materials across our own brands
• Deliver a program of capacity building that addresses most significant needs as identified through vendor and factory engagement (2-3 events by 2020)

• Complete tracing of our 2nd tier (fabric, washing, inputs) supply chain by 2020 

• Engage workers through training programs and helpline 

• Engage key brands and set minimum criteria for entry 

• Drive uptake of sustainable sales across all categories

• Deliver regular training program for buying teams on ethical sourcing, including on sustainability attributes and purchasing practices


Environment

Our objective

By 2020 we will have adopted more sustainable packaging and will understand, and have programs in place to respond to, our most significant environmental impacts.

Key activities

• Adopt sustainable packaging and provide more information to customers about responsible disposal
• Deliver Australian Packaging Covenant requirements and continually improve our annual performance rating
• Conduct waste audit and develop management plan to continually increase recycling rates
• Conduct energy audit and develop management plan to improve energy efficiency
• Assess feasibility of implementing solar at our Fulfilment Centre
• Assess most significant carbon impacts and implement strategies to mitigate them
• Assess feasibility of repairing faulty items and end-of-life textile recycling


Community

Our objective

By 2020 we will be positively contributing to the empowerment of people in our community, have clear pathways for our employees to be involved in this work and will measure our contribution.

Key activities

• Draft community governance framework
• Formalise partnerships with a set of charity organisations
• Develop framework for employee community participation
• Undertake customer-facing charity activations
• Measure and report on our impact


Governance and Communications

Our objective

By 2020 we will have a sustainability action plan in place in every function of our business. We will share information about our sustainability performance and challenges with our customers and interested stakeholders and inspire them to consider and manage their own sustainability impacts.

Key activities

• Quarterly objectives which support sustainability goals in every function
• Sustainability sub-section on website detailing our programs
• Undertake initiative to share human stories of people who make our own brands
• Deliver sustainability shop on site
• Engage customer understanding of their own sustainability impacts
• Engage with industry to ensure we are across best practice and emerging trends
