3 Last Minute Training Hacks

If you’re running this weekend’s City2Surf, chances are you’ll need these.

So, you’re running the City2Surf and haven’t (really) started training yet. While not really recommended, it happens. We’ve all been guilty of of eleventh hour, last-ditch efforts (high school, anyone?). Preparation, after all, isn’t everyone’s strength. But you’ve got to be in it to win it, right? And, it's only an easy 14 kms. A fun run, even.

So, short of loading up on carbs the eve before race day (any excuse, right?), what’s the best way to pull off a half-decent performance?

While we love indulging the rumours that are leading the charge on social media right now as celebrities with little to no fitness authority offer their five cents / ‘expert opinion’,  we decided we needed to fact check this one given your health and wellbeing are at stake. That’s why we hit up Lean Bean Fitness’s founder Lizzie Bland to help you sisters and brothers out. You can thank us later.

Go easy, tiger

“Go easy on leg workouts from today onwards apart from a light jog or two,” says Bland. “Keeping your body healthy and injury free before a race is the priority so keep moving but don't try intense leg strength training.”

Get stretchy

“Keeping muscles supple is essential, so taking a couple of yoga/stretch classes before Sunday is recommended.” Without these classes, you may find basic things – like putting your shoes on – quite difficult. On the plus side though, your physio will be able to afford that new Maserati.

DIY warm up

“Doing a daily mini sequence in your living room including downward dog, planks (to engage core muscles), quad and hip flexor stretches are a good idea - just make sure you take your time in each position to relax into tight muscle groups in the back and legs.”

Look the part (thank goodness for 3-hour delivery*, right?). We've got you.
