"I was born and raised in Sydney. My mother is from Sierra Leone and my father is South African, but I am human first!

Lily Cummings

“... Which means I have the freedom to be whoever I want to be. I’m able to create, discover and reinvent myself as many times as I want without caring about the judgements of others. I call this new journey being imperfectly perfect. I didn’t always have this mindset and most of us don’t begin our journey with it. Society tells us that we can be anything, that we all have to reach certain standards of beauty, happiness and wealth to fully live our lives. The turning point for me was when I got tired of starving myself, trying to fit into what I thought was going to be the best version of me. I was going against my human nature. Being different and looking different from everyone else felt like a major disadvantage. Growing up as a black girl in Australia and having no representation of people who looked like me made me feel like I was an imposter, that unless I looked like what had been portrayed as perfect I didn’t belong. I was depressed and miserable for so long and now it feels like magic that I was able to find myself again. It took me time to realise that being different and standing out was the biggest advantage, allowing myself to be free and human would change my life for the better.”
