How To Pass Off Activewear As Everyday-wear

Work out: optional

Tights and crops and speed stripes are no longer a case of gym-only. Instead, thanks to the smart-casual thinking of the likes of Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Co., they’ve made their way into our everyday-wear pile.

Athleisure, sports chic, whatever you want to call it – it’s here to stay. From simple white kicks and a sweatshirt to lycra accents, it’s time to embrace the trend.

Global know-it-all Forbes blames this trend on the millennials (there, you brought it on yourselves). More specifically, on an “increased health consciousness, and a cultural shift in the workplace” on their behalf that has led to the rise and rise of acceptance of sports-like wear in the office. Gone, then, are the days of kicking your trainers under your desk in the hope that no one sees them. Make those Dad sneakers part of your daily look.

This doesn’t mean it’s an all-or-nothing affair, a head-to-toe look. Instead, think race stripes on your denim, chunky trainers with your jeans, sweats with your skirts and tights as pants (yes, they ARE pants). Team your sweatshirts with a skirt that’s femme and floaty, or if you’re looking for something a little more office-ready, a pencil skirt.

There are – as there are with any trend – a few hard and fast how-to’s. The most important being to make sure your pieces are always pristine. Think the whitest of whites for your kicks, and that your sweats are always pill free. You’re going for sporty, not shabby.

And, turns out, this is one trend that is good for you too. A study last year by Victoria University revealed that simply wearing lycra leggings – whether you planned to exercise or not – greatly increases your chance of exercising … at some point. Science, hey?

So, what are our picks to up your leisure time?

P.E Nation Alley-Oop Jeans

Bring those speed stripes to your everyday wear. This girlfriend silhouette has a sporty feel to it, complete with retro vibes thanks to the light blue wash.

First Base Original Sportswear Tee

The slogan tee … to work out in, or to work in. To elevate this piece, pair it with leather pants and pumps or a feature skirt.

Cotton On Body Active Tapered Leg Gym Trackies

Two words for you: elasticised waist. Winning. Team this with a simple white shirt or a T-shirt and coat. Sneakers? Essential.

New Balance Classics 574

Get the kicks. Can’t get enough of these retro feels and can’t get over just how comfortable these are.

Cotton On Body Active Waffle Crew Neck Long Sleeve Top

The crew neck that you can wear with just about anything. Our tip? Wear it over a silk slip dress with sneaks of your choice. Soft stretch jersey – how could you not?

Ivy Park Flat Knit Logo Joggers

The statement tracks. By Beyoncé. Enough said. Love these with a crisp white shirt.

Nike Air Dress

The oversized tee dress. Pair this with a leather jacket and statement sneakers.

Lorna Jane Dancer Cropped Sweat

The retro sweatshirt. Team this with a pencil skirt and, yes, you guess it – sneakers.
