The stars turned the fashion up to 11 for the 95th annual Oscars, held earlier today at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
Between the glittering black gowns and statement rosettes, there’s one particular red carpet trend that’s firing up the group chat: lingerie-inspired dressing.
From Julia Fox’s grocery runs to Emma Corrin walking the FW23 Miu Miu runway in embellished party panties, underwear as outerwear shows no signs of slowing – and Hollywood’s best and brightest have given this tricky trend the Oscars tick of approval.
A sheer dress is the simplest – and most versatile – entry point to a lingerie-inspired look. A sparkling sheer maxi skirt teamed with chic shapewear à la Ashley Graham is a fresh way to offset a high neckline or demure long sleeves, while swathes of frothy sheer tulle creates a softer take on the trend – we love Halle Bailey’s seafoam green look, complete with matching briefs *just* visible beneath.
Corset bodices proved a big mood on the red carpet, with the subtle boning lines on Stephanie Hsu’s vibrant pink gown nodding to the trend without pulling focus away from that maxi bubble hem. On the flip, Mindy Kaling’s structured cut-out bodice made corsetry the focal point (and is giving edgier brides some serious wedding inspo, too). Looking for something in between? We love the open lattice detailing on the sides of Rainey Qualley’s ink black bodice.
Honourable mentions go to Florence Pugh’s mini short moment, Janelle Monae’s cropped black bustier top, and the sheer black looks served by Lady Gaga and Rihanna. If the Oscars red carpet is anything to go by (and it usually is), the underwear as outerwear trend will be sticking around. Take your style cues from the stars, and dare to bare a little more this season.
