Sure, a bunch of flowers and a hug will always go down a treat, but why not gift your mum an experience she’ll really enjoy this Mother’s Day? Don’t worry if you’re lost for inspiration, we’ve come up with five ways you can pleasantly surprise your mum and not one of them includes potpourri or smelly soaps.

Organise a day trip

There is nothing she’ll love more than knowing that she has your company for the whole day. But when choosing where to go, remember to cater for her passions, not yours! If she loves wine, go wine hunting at a nearby vineyard. Or if she loves hiking, plan a day hike with a packed lunch. You can return the favour from your school lunches. But go for something a little tastier than muesli bars and cheese sandwiches.

Do a workshop

There are hundreds of great day courses and workshops on offer nearly every day in Australia. Ranging from basket weaving and magic to mindfulness and jewellery making, these workshops are usually pretty affordable and they give your mum a chance to try something she’s never tried before. You'll both love the new skills.

Book a profesh photo shoot

To create a lasting impression (literally), book you and your mum in for a professional shoot. Choose her favourite location, it could be her local beach or a spot in her backyard, and get some Vaseline-lens photos for the hall table. Even better, book an amazing make-up artist too, then go for lunch with your pretty faces on.

Plan a fancy picnic

Gourmet picnics are having a moment right now, so why don’t you jump on board the trend and take your mum for a million-dollar picnic. Not literally of course, but choose a spot with priceless views, set up beach chairs, treat her with champagne, cheese, fruit and chocolates. Then serve her like a queen.

Let her Netflix and relax

If you owe your mum big time and want to make the ultimate effort, why not set her up on the couch and let her binge on The Crown, Young Victoria, or something equally mother-approved. Then, once you’ve served her snacks and a crisp G & T, get to work tidying, cleaning and doing the washing. Now, who wouldn’t like that? It's guaranteed to be a Mother's Day she'll never forget.
