It was a favourite of the Palm Springs set, the Hollywood crew. Jackie Kennedy, Katharine Hepburn, and Audrey too. Linen was where it was at for those long summer days driving with the top down, or spent poolside with a cool drink in hand.

Then: our dads found it and claimed it as their own with oversized shirts with ties and too-tight pants. And they do what they always do. They ruin it. But, in the growing trend of claiming things back – Dad sneakers and Mum jeans among them – linen once again cooler than ever before.

The resurgence started once again – as all good things do – in the bedroom. Linen found its way back into the collective conscious as linen sheets that just about broke the internet when they (re)launched so it was, really, just a matter of time before we literally wanted to wear our never-want-to-leave bed linen on the reg.

It’s the natural fibre that breathes and, oh boy, do you want to TOUCH it. A quick internet trawl will tell you it’s among one of the older fabrics in the world, but a quick glance at Instagram will tell you it’s everywhere.

With fresh feels and pared-back vibes, linen is – and has been for a while now – the go-to.

It’s the perfect palette cleanse, as super subtle shades – plenty of whites, creams and khakis – have found their way into high rotation thanks to this summer-ready lightweight fabrication.

It’s softer, smoother, more sensuous than its cotton counterparts. More yin than yang, it’s a softly-spoken, gently-does-it kind of fabrication. As if, in linen, you’re always on holiday time and the stress is always less.

It’s easy, it’s breezy and it’s – always – vacation-ready. No long strictly just resort wear-only (you know, the kind you buy in bulk the minute you land in any semi-warm/ tropical destination and then never wear again), or the stuff your art teacher wore, it’s the ultimate crush – and those crease lines it builds over the day only make us love it more. It’s like you’ve stepped straight out of Slim Aaron’s Poolside, like you really KNOW the French Riviera.

Indulge in button-down dresses, soft tailoring and oversized silhouettes. Think playsuits and summer dresses you won’t want to take off and lightweight blazers that take that slip dress of yours to the next level.

So, how to wear this linen you love so?

Team it with pale denim for 90s feels. Wear it loose. Think soft, oversized shirts, free flowing pants, ultra-generous tailoring.

Here’s our head to toe linen edit. We feel a holiday coming on…
