This is the music, art and culture festival with a twist. Ironically, programmed just after Sydney's vivid, it is a light festival - sort of… but the light is dark and creepy. It’s like one big Halloween party on the streets of Hobart. Which means lots of outfits ideas inspired by the artworks and installations.
But, Hobart is cold in June. So you’ll have to be creative with layers. Here are some tips on where to go and what you should wear.
Night Mass
Night Mass
Friday 14 + Saturday 15 June, 10pm till late
Friday 21 + Saturday 22 June, 10pm till late
Corner of Murray and Liverpool Street
The one event you cannot miss at Dark Mofo is their legendary Night Mass. Described as a ritual party, it could get pretty freaky. The music event will see Sampa the Great and Mallrat come to town and you are advised to 'Dress to Excess.' Glitter, jewellery, face paint can all help take your outfit to the next level, but take a jacket and cloak it, as you'll warm up quickly with all the dancing.
Siloam
Siloam
Wednesday–Monday, 10am–5pm. Open until 6pm Thursday 20–Sunday 23 June
MONA
Take the tunnel that takes you where you don’t want to go in MONA. This installation includes The Divine Comedy by Alfredo Jaar, 2018, that will take you between Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. Dress for the section you think you’ll end up in.
We've picked the best of both Worlds...
Ryoji Ikeda - Spectra
Ryoji Ikeda - Spectra
Thursday 20–Sunday 23 June Sunset to Sunrise
Museum grounds, MONA
This giant beam of light is always a fun one at Dark Mofo. Head over to the museum at night to listen to the installation sing. Did I mention it’s cold? Bring your boots, coat, hat, gloves and scarf to ensure you don’t end up freezing. Playing with colour is a great way not to blend in with the night. How about wearing white to match the installation? Perfect colour blocking for your Instagram shots.
Candle Mass
Candle Mass
Sunday 16 June, 11pm–12am (doors open 10.30pm)
Odeon Theatre
Sweden is lending Dark Mofo their most hectic metal act with Candle Mass’s first ever performance in Australia. Wear all black, with heaps of silver chains and red accents to really fit the gothic vibe.
Dark Path
Friday 14–Sunday 16 June, 5–10pm
Wednesday 19–Sunday 23 June, 5–10pm
Regatta Grounds + Queens Domain + Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens
Dark Mofo are opening up the ground of the city for spooky installations, in the Dark Path. You will see works from legendary Tasmanian artist Julia Gough, and an artwork called Demon Core. This installation will potentially be the coldest venue, as you are out in an open park at night. I recommend lots of layers, and maybe something high-vis so your mates can find you?
Winter Feast
Friday 14–Sunday 16 June
Wednesday 19–Sunday 23 June
Princes Wharf 1
The Winter Feast is one part of Dark Mofo the whole city gets behind, mostly because of the incredible food on offer. Sit outside beside the fires with Tasmania's finest foods. Go hungry, you will want to try everything! I recommend wearing a roomy dress (with thick tights) or pants, so you have room for more. Pair with an oversized scarf to wrap up in and giant coat to keep you nice and cosy.
Nude Solstice Swim
Nude Solstice Swim
Saturday 22 June, 7.42am
Long Beach, Sandy Bay
The last Dark Mofo event is what it says on the tin. You won’t be needing any clothes for the Nude Swim at Long Beach. But you might want to bring slipper boots and a fluffy dressing gown for after!
