What makes a great relationship? Obviously Google is free and super easy to use but rather than look to expert advice or any kind of scientific source, we took approximately 10 minutes to think about what real love means and came up with a really long, really confusing list that should never see the light of day. Convinced we needed to undertake some actual research on the elusive topic, we called in our mate Harry Garside for a quick chat on love, relationships and Valentine’s Day. From what to wear on date night to a contentious call on what could be the greatest Rom-Com of all time, read on for some mostly silly, always honest relationship do’s and don’ts.
Let’s start easy. Choccies or flowers?
100% chocolate. Screw the flowers, they die.
What are your love languages?
I think my love language is quality time and acts of service.
Greatest Rom-Com of all time?
I love Rom-Coms, way to throw me under the bus! I’m trying to think of my favourite… I love ‘Are We Officially Dating?’ with Zac Efron. That’s a hot man and a great movie. One of my favourites.
What is the best present you’ve ever given or received?
For me, it’s not so much birthdays or gifts. It’s just little notes. Coming home to that is pretty special. It’s the little things.
Are you more of the small tokens of appreciation type, or do you go for grand gestures?
I think part of my love language, although it’s not a love language, is just humour. Bringing humour to the relationship is so important. There’s no evidence in this world to prove that life is serious. I just love to be playful and joking around and very childlike in a relationship.
Worst date you’ve ever been on?
When I was younger, I used to jump on the bowling [club] roof in my local town. It was just my spot but I chose to take someone there, a girl, for the first time and she didn’t want to jump up. I offered to sort of help her up, and she didn’t want to, so then I was like, ‘Well ok, we just won’t do that. That’s okay. That’s totally fine.’ But then I had no other ideas of what to do. So yeah, the date didn’t really go much further than that.
Have you ever forgotten a partner’s birthday or anniversary?
I’m not too bad. I always put everything in my diary. There are times that I forget like a month in advance. So I don’t have a good present or I’m not super well prepared for it, but I don’t usually forget the actual day.
Have you ever pretended to cook for a date but secretly ordered takeaway and plated it up?
I’m a terrible cook so I would openly say I’m a bad cook and we’re getting takeout.
What’s your go-to date night outfit?
I’ve really sort of explored my fashion sense in the last year. I always like to look nice on the bottom, so have nice shoes on and then look pretty colourful or special in my shirt. I’ve been dabbling with jewellery lately. I even got my ears pierced again.
Do you go for statement nails or clean and simple?
Always have your nails done. Absolutely.
And finally, what does real love mean to you?
Definitely a sense of home, but just knowing you’ve got each other’s back. Through it all. Even when your partner’s not there and you’re choosing your partner and the relationship, that’s when you know.
Harry recently revealed that he and his partner Ash have gone their separate ways in an Instagram post of the two with a short but sweet caption:
@harry_garside
“Ex Partner ✅ Best friend ✅ Still my Valentine’s ✅#supportyourex”. Now if that’s not real love then I guess we’ll keep googling…
