Every Thursday after school we would race home, turn on the (one, clunky) tv and live for the opening chords of the Buffy theme music – an organ of course, pierced by a thrashing guitar, a horror movie omen of the peril (and ultimately combat) to come.
The eerie full-moon graphic, the pointed, stake-esque font, all the signifiers of horrors that awaited in the next gripping 20 minutes. It was a thrill.
And then there was Sarah Michelle Gellar in all her no-BS glory. The quick-witted, utterly fearless, pouting protagonist. Sitting in our pleated uniforms coveting Buffy’s pleated minis, our obsession with her wardrobe formed. The moment it ended we would pick up the wall-mounted landline and dial our best friend’s number to debrief on the episode just watched.
As if you need proof that it wasn’t just vampires she was slaying, these are some of the outfit hits we’re still translating into our wardrobes today…
If she can kick ass in knee-high boots, so can we.
