Marc Newson Re-invents R.M. Williams’ 70 Year Old Boots

Reimagining heritage classics.

One of our Aussie favourites, an export we’re most proud of, R.M.Williams has been crafting their quality Gardener boots - and building them to last - for generations. So what happens when “one of the most influential designers of his generation” pulls this classic apart and starts afresh?

Marc Newson

The Australian designer was chosen for his local roots, and trusted to take care of the brand. With works in major museums the world over, from MoMA in New York to London’s V&A, and an impressive career that spans aircraft design, furniture, jewellery, clothing and more, plus Qantas, Apple and luxury watch brands on his resume, Sydney-born Marc Newson is recognised as one of the most accomplished designers of his time.  In an exciting partnership, and the first of R.M. Williams' ‘character collaborations’, the South Australia-based workshop sees Newson completely reimagine a previously unchanged heritage design, transforming their classic 1950s boot into a ‘future icon’.

Introducing The Limited Edition Yard Boot 365.

When the OG Gardener was revealed to the Australian public in the late 1950s, it was hailed as the ultimate hard-wearing work boot, the answer to “the combined effects of mud, water and sand”, it was specially designed for working in long grass, orchards, dairies and swampy or sandy conditions.

According to the brand, “While the design philosophy of R.M. Williams hasn’t changed, designed with purpose for life’s adventures, the way we work has – considerably. It’s with those changes in mind that Marc designed The Yard Boot 365, ensuring that the modern worker, the global tastemakers and those that are leading change have an accessible and fashionable boot to support their goals.”

Newson has an affinity with luxury labels, and it shows. In premium nappa leather, greasy kip leather or Italian suede, the reinvented design is distinctly contemporary yet true to the brand’s next level standards of craftsmanship.
Made in Australia by R.M.Williams' craftsmen, the first design in the series a limited edition and only available to exclusive partners.

How satisfying is that elastic gusset, engineered from one single piece that flows into the signature, logo-embroidered tug?
