Mum Style: Our Latest Crush

“Motherhood exhausts me, overwhelms me and breaks me. And then, it awakens me” posted founder of motherhood meditation app Expectful, Anna Gannon, on her Instagram. Between the feeds, the naps and the heart-bursting moments, our wardrobe can quickly slide down the priorities list along with brushing teeth and drinking your tea while still hot. A woman’s role in the world has never been more free-flowing but it also can mean sometimes we feel the need to dress to be everything to everyone – at one time.

So how does one navigate the various joys of motherhood (spit-up, mud, crayons and avo smears) while still feeling sartorially connected and comfortable? I deal with these on the daily, and it's a question that's been rolling around since the early days of Mother's Group. Like with most things, the French seem to have figured this out long ago. It is said that there is an unspoken mama uniform made up of soft shirting, jeans and a tote to ensure that dressing in the morning is just a quick coordination of staples. Inspired (only always) by the Parisian way, we’ve zoomed in on a few à la mode families around the world to create our own version of on-the-go style habits.

Ground yourself
As we are the centre of the universe for our babes then keeping grounded tends to help in the face of chaos. A warm earthy wardrobe palette is the perfect extension of our nurturing qualities. From turmeric to caramel, forest and coffee colours - it’s the constant between cool mums. Bonus time: once you stock up on a few of these combos mix and match can’t go wrong.

Button-up
The French favourite for a fresh maman is the loose button-up shirt. Soft flowy fabrics preferred as the last thing you want to be feeling is stiff when chasing the cubs about. Mother and writer Anna Harrison is the ultimate muse in this oversized look.

Get waisted
High-waisted that is. Whether you opt for denim, linen or cotton the classic painter wide-leg pant is winning us over for its ability to look chic on all flavours of women. Photographer and Byron local Amelia Fullerton seems to have a rotation of colours in the style while she raises her three girls. Blues, chocolates and off-whites are the neutral of choice and will add a bit of playfulness to any outfit.

Mule over
If you have ever had to leave the house either with a babe wrapped onto you or toddler in tow then you will understand the power of the simple slide shoe. Luckily enough the flat tan mule look is having a moment in the sun. Making them not only functional but also raises any outfit’s cool factor. The ultimate mother accessory.

Texturise
Knits, delicate t-shirts and teddy bear outerwear is like the active mum’s substitution for the lack of snuggling blanket time you’re getting a night. Warm and fuzzy just how our kids like us to be. And since we’re getting all utility on our everyday looks the textures add a casual depth to basic cuts.
